If you don't have goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) in your herb garden, you'll miss a splendid late-summer show-and a chance at buried treasure. This rugged, versatile herb adapts to those difficult spots in your garden, where the soil may be poor and dry but there's plenty of sun. The plant has been used in salves for wounds and insect bites, and a tea of the leaves makes a good sore-throat gargle. And legend has it that goldenrod can serve as a divining rod, pointing to buried treasure. So go for the gold this summer!
